Ray Foster

I have been a full time antiques and arts dealer since 1986. As a dealer in the art and antiques industry, I started out as an exhibitor at shows throughout the northeast, participating in as many as 20 shows per year, as well as assisting other dealers at shows as far away as Nashville, Alexandria, Brandywine, and New York City. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s I managed Horace Porter Antiques in South Windsor, Connecticut. During this time I began furniture restoration for other dealers and collectors, specializing in early surfaces and paint decorated furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries.

This vocation, as well as an appreciation of impressionist painting, led me to trying my hand at painting pictures. I had already been summering in Maine at my Grandparent’s coastal farm since childhood and produced my first pieces there and still continue to be inspired by the beauty of the area in Eastern Maine where I now have lived myself for the past ten years.

Original Art

I am a self taught artist. As a creative individual from a young age, whose family goes back centuries in Eastern Maine, and having been raised in Connecticut, I've had the best of both worlds in terms of exposure to the arts and the inspiring beauty of coastal Maine. I have not had any formal training as a painter; I have developed a style of my own, concentrating on light and atmospheric conditions such as fog, sea smoke, and storms, as well as the clear brilliance of a mid summer day on the coast of Maine. I have been painting for 10 years. Many Maine artists inspire me, for example, Marsden Hartley and Rockwell Kent, although I don't paint like them. I push my color and light keys and tend to be exuberant in my use of color. I mostly paint with a pallet knife on board.

Please be sure to view my artwork under the painting section. I have current pieces listed for sale as well as sold works of art in private collections.
